Watkins Maintains the Edge - Yet Calvert-Lewin Could Yet Make the World Cup

Only one goal in his first ten Premier League games this campaign had plenty of doubting whether Dominic Calvert-Lewin's best days were over.

However, a only four weeks afterwards, he stands as the most talked-about attacker in England following netting 7 goals in 6 consecutive games.

His latest strike, in a 1-1 draw versus Sunderland, elevated his season's haul to eight, making him the top English goalscorer in the Premier League this term.

A Remarkable Revival

The 28-year-old joined Leeds United on a free transfer in the summer, following a nine-year period with Everton that was blighted by injuries in its latter stages.

But, the statistics behind his comeback in Daniel Farke's new fast-breaking 3-5-2 system are extremely impressive.

His six-game scoring sequence sees him in elite company as only the 11th English player to score in six or more consecutive Premier League outings.

To put that into perspective, even England captain Harry Kane never managed a run lasting this many games - his top is two separate five-match streaks.

And the sole English striker to surpass Calvert-Lewin in the modern era is Jamie Vardy, who went on an eight-game scoring streak for Leicester City in 2019.

The Reason for the Hot Streak?

What has made Calvert-Lewin so tough to stop in this period? A recent opponent's manager described it aptly.

"He has the impeccable timing," the manager stated. "He's clever and a excellent striker and he found the timing to arrive exactly when needed."

That instinct and timing inside the 18-yard box was what turned him into a popular figure at his former team.

The ex- Sheffield United player has 11 England appearances, scoring four goals, but has not represented the national team since the last European Championship.

Observers feel the striker will be in contention for the World Cup squad if he can sustain this standard.

"He looks as fit as he has in a considerable period," one said. "If he maintains this level of form... then he's going to be in a debate for a World Cup place."
